SANDIE BAND


Hey Band!

Wow! What a great two weeks we’ve had – High Plains Champions, 1st Division from all judges at UIL Region Contest and now an opportunity to represent our school at the UIL Area Contest in Odessa, Saturday. We will compete with 25 of the best bands in the state for 10 spots in the finals and 5 spots at the State Championship Contest in San Antonio.

Friday, October 22

AHS vs. Lubbock Monterey Football Game

7:30 Regular rehearsal on the turf

9:40 Dismissed for Pep Rally

3:45 Meal in cafeteria – Money due ($5) on Wednesday

4:30 Rehearsal, change into uniforms

6:00 Leave for the stadium

When we return to school make absolutely sure that you get everything packed in your hanging bag for Saturday morning

Looooong Solid Black Socks!

Black shoes, Black shirt to wear under your uniform.


Saturday, October 23 – UIL Area Marching Contest

Ratliff Stadium - Odessa

2:30A.M. Meet at the band hall – Wear jeans, tennis shoes and band shirt for the trip down and back.

3:00A.M. – Leave for Odessa

7:30A.M Arrive at Odessa High School Campus –breakfast, rehearsal, change into uniform

8:45- Leave for Ratliff Stadium

9:10 – Warm-up time

10:30 Pre-lim performance time

After we perform we will change out of uniforms, have lunch at the stadium and watch the rest of the Pre-lims. You can wear shorts(school dress code) in the stadium in the afternoon if you want.

4:30 – Drum Major Retreat – Announcement of Finals

A random draw will determine the finals performance time. Our exact plans for the rest of the evening will be based on if we make finals when we perform. We will have food for you at the stadium after the pre-lims. Award ceremony and announcement of bands advancing to State will be at 9:00. We will load and leave as soon as finals are over.

General Information about the Contest

LOCATION: Ratliff Stadium; Odessa, Texas

BUS PARKING: Buses and equipment trucks will be parked in the EAST parking lot. AUTOMOBILES WILL NOT BE ALLOWED IN THE EAST PARKING LOT. Please have buses enter through the east gate off of Grandview Ave. Please let your parents and fans know that they MAY NOT park or drive on the east side of the stadium.

SEATING: Bands will sit in the EASTSIDE stands following their performance. Spectators will sit on the WESTSIDE. Bands will be allowed to sit on the WESTSIDE for the finals performances as long as they are in some sort of uniform (band shirts will suffice) and they sit together as a group. They will need to sit on either end of the stands so as to leave the middle section open for paying spectators.

ADMISSION: There will be an admission charge of $5.00 for all spectators six and older. Participating students and sponsors will be admitted free ONLY ON THE EASTSIDE of the stadium. Please announce this to your parents and fans.

LOST AND FOUND: Located in the Press Box.

VIDEO TAPING: If you plan to videotape with your own camera, please plan to do so in front of the Press Box. Trans-Global Video Productions will provide a professionally recorded DVD to each band. Other copies of the video will be available for purchase on the WESTSIDE of the stadium.

DRUM MAJOR There will be a Drum Major Retreat at the end of the Preliminary Round

RETREAT: of the Area Marching Contest. All Drum Majors will report to the ramp at

the northeast end of the stadium to be lined up according to the performance order of the round. Once organized, the group will move to the front sideline and each school will be recognized as an Area participant and the Drum Major(s) will be presented a plaque. The bands certified to perform in the Finals competition will then be announced. A similar retreat will also occur after the Finals competition. At that time, the bands certified to the State Marching Contest, plus two alternates, will be announced.

Week of October 4 - 9

Hey Band!

This promises to be your most exciting week of band so far this year. In fact, the next three weeks should be quite “a ride.” We want you to enjoy the ride. This is what you’ve worked for since August.

MONDAY – Full Band Rehearsal 4-6

TUESDAY-Wednesday - Section Rehearsals - Finish playing off music


THURSDAY, October 7 – FOOTBALL GAME IN LUBBOCK

1:05 – Dismissed from classes

Remind your teachers before Thursday (periods 5-7). If possible get work in advance so that you don’t get behind.

Leaving at 2:00p.m.

Dinner at Furr’s family dining – We will change into uniforms at the stadium.

The game is at Lowrey Field.

Wear jeans, tennis shoes and band shirt for the trip down and back.

We will be home around 12:30a.m.

We must have all of your medical forms before you sign the bus list!

We will have band Friday morning!


SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9 HIGH PLAINS MARCHING FESTIVAL

This is an all-day event. (see attached contest information and schedule). The judging and performance format will be the same as the UIL Area contest in Odessa on October 23rd.

Meet at 12:30p.m. - Back at AHS around 9:30p.m.

We will warm-up, rehearse, load equipment and change into uniform here at school. We will leave on buses for Dick-Bivins Stadium at around 2:00. Our performance time for pre-lims is at 3:40. Announcement of ratings will be at 4:30. A random draw will determine the finals performance time. Our exact plans for the rest of the evening will be based on when we perform. We will have food for you at the stadium after the pre-lims. The finals performances will conclude with an awards assembly at 8:30p.m. after which we will load up and return to AHS. Weather has not been kind the past two years, so be prepared to adapt to whatever conditions the day brings.

We have a great show! You are already performing at a higher level than we were able to achieve in previous years. We want to continue to work hard, make improvements and go into competitions knowing that we have done everything possible to achieve our goals.

High Plains Marching Festival

Saturday, October 9, 2010

Parking: Bands enter the north parking lot from 3rd next to the Dilla Villa. Proceed to the western part of the parking lot. Spectators park in the south parking lot off 10th.

Admission: Gate admission is $3 for prelims and $3 for finals. Bands in uniform and their directors will be admitted at no charge. Bands in street clothes will be admitted free when entering the “home” stands as a group with directors. All spectators must sit on the west side. The stadium will open at 9:00 a.m. for prelims and 5:30 p.m. for finals. Principals/Superintendents admitted free with ID.

Concessions: Full concessions on the home side. Drinks and candy only on the visitor side.

Format: The festival will utilize UIL Area critique standards and format.

Field Assembly: Prelims: Following prelims all drum majors will report to the field for placement and the announcement of prelim awards. Drum majors will step forward to accept awards.

Hey Band!



I’ll make this one short and sweet. Here is your day –by day schedule.

Obviously this will be a very busy week for all of us.



MONDAY – Full Band Rehearsal 4-6

TUESDAY-THURSDAY - Section Rehearsals - Get music to Scene 2 played-off.

WEDNESDAY – Money for Friday meal due after school



THURSDAY – HOMECOMING PARADE

Meet at 6:30 Wear Jeans and band shirts



FRIDAY – FOOTBALL GAME AHS vs. MIDLAND LEE



SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 TRI-STATE FAIR PARADE

Meet at 8:30 for uniform check-out. Leave for parade on buses at 9:00a.m. We are entry number 89. We will take some pictures of you in your uniforms while we are waiting. We expect to be back to the band hall around noon.

years’ band so exceptional. Keep up the good work.

Week of September 6 -September 11



Hey Band!



Thanks for your hard work this week. Great job at the game tonight!



NO AFTERNOON PRACTICE THIS MONDAY. Enjoy your extra day off. It will be a while before get another two day break.



Section Rehearsal schedule is on the back. Note the time and day for your section – If you cannot attend please let us know and fill out the pink “notice of conflict” form.



We will not travel to the out of town game on Friday.



Saturday, September 11 -10:a.m. – 11:00a.m.

WTAMU Music Faculty will host the All-Region Audition music help session. You will receive a group lesson on music that we will all be working on later this year. There is no charge and I strongly encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity to get help from an expert on your instrument.



If you have not turned in handbook forms, those are due NOW.

Band fee is also due unless you have made special arrangements for paying.

Week of August 30-September 3



Hey Band!



Great job this week! We are really proud of the work that all of you have done

since the beginning of summer band. Next week will be an exciting time as we

put the entire first drill together for our first halftime performance.



Full Band Rehearsal Monday after school – 4-6

(We will not rehearse the following Monday – Labor Day)



Wednesday Morning “Panoramic Picture” - You will need to be at school at 7:00a.m. Change into your uniform. (don’t forget long black socks and black shoes) The picture will be taken at 7:30. After the picture you will change out of uniform and we will continue with a regular band rehearsal.



Music playoff Tuesday-Thursday – Sign up for times. Finish Scene 1. Section rehearsals will start the following week.



Football game against Palo Duro on Friday. Band Queen “coronation” will also be a part of this halftime show.



If you have not turned in handbook forms, those are due NOW.
